Let’s talk about a new type of collaboration—FanFiction. FanFiction is a story based on the characters, setting, and premise of another author’s work. Think of it as social story telling. FanFiction is usually based on movies, TV series, novels or video games.
FanFiction became popular in the 1960s when the Star Trek series inspired fans to write new episodes based on the Star Trek characters—Captain Kirk, Spock, and the crew of the Enterprise. The Star Trek FanFiction stories were printed in a fan magazine. Now there are websites of FanFiction organized on every popular film or novel.
